SEW much fun!!!!

Oh my heavens...I had the most fun in the studio today with my sweet friend Lillian.
You may remember Lillian from here.
We had the creative juices flowing and I had a craft planned for us to do together as a surprise.
We're going to share our pincushion/sewing kit tutorial with you right now!
Are you ready?
Although the idea of mason jar pin cushion/sewing kits are not new,
they were to us in a way,
because we used cuts from my FINALLY FREE fabric collection for Robert Kaufman.

Here is the finished product but don't worry,
we'll take you step by step for the tutorial.

I found these wide mouth Ball mason jars at Walmart...
loved the half-pint size...perfect for a DIY pincushion and sewing kit.

Lillian cut the fabric...
while I prepped the jars and finished other studio projects.
Fun new fabrics to choose from in the studio...
SUPPLIES YOU WILL NEED:
Sewing Kit materials
Half Pint Mason Jars
Fabric Scrap of your choice
Cotton balls or fiberfill
Colorful Straight Pens
Decorative Card Stock
Glue gun, & Glue Sticks (not pictured)
I fell in love with these beautiful pins all sparkly with colorful toppers!

Step 1:
Using the lid of the jar,
cut out a circle of the same size from decorative card stock...
(using the back side of the card stock)
Step 2:
Using the lid of the jar, trace around it on the wrong side of your fabric but increase that circle’s radius about 1.5”-2" and cut out the larger circle...or if you have a round object which is approximately 5" in diameter that will work perfectly.
Look for a plate or a bowl or something in your house approximately 5" in diameter.
Step 3:
Cut your 5" fabric circle.
Step 4:
Use a small handful of poly fiberfill
or cotton balls to create the pin cushion.
obviously not a hand model here...I was in clay 30 minutes before this and am usually covered in paint on a daily basis.
I'd rather get dirty and creative in the studio
than visit the salon these days.

Step 5:
Push the jar liner against the poly fiberfill
and tug at the fabric to make as few wrinkles as possible.

Step 6:

Hot glue the extra fabric to the back of the jar liner

Step 7:
Use the decorative card stock circle you cut earlier to cover the underneath part of the pin cushion lid.
This covers all the extra fabric you just glued.
I happened to have color copies of my art on card stock but you could use any decorative card stock you like.

Step 8:

Use any scraps you have to hot glue around the lid of the jar.
You can also make a bow and hot glue that on if you'd like.
Be creative...
maybe you can think of something even better...
like adding trim or pom pom fringe or rick rack.

So what do you think???
Let me know how you liked our easy and fun tutorial.
I made the one on the left and Lillian made the one on the right.
Then we celebrated our SEW much fun craft time with a summer lunch.
The ideas are endless for these jars covered in fun fabrics.
Check back soon...
there might just be a give away
this weekend!!!!
Let me know if what you think about our project and if you'd like to win one.
xoxo,
Caroline

ON ANOTHER NOTE....
Feeling guilty about having such a fun summer
while so many friends of ours are struggling with situations I can hardly imagine.
Thanks to so many of you who already know about sweet Sloan
and have been praying for her and her precious family since this.
She has been in isolation for weeks and is having her bone marrow transplant this Friday
Know her family would appreciate prayers from around the globe.
Our friend Grier
Our friend Mary Bryan
My friend Amy
A friend whose daughter is in treatment for an eating disorder....
My heart is so heavy for them all.
My mother's advice is always sound....
Be a good listener and caring friend
Pray
Rather than feel guilty,
allow these situations to make you (me) feel more appreciative
and aware that each day is truly a gift.
Thank you, Mom.
I know God is sovereign and he will allow good to come from each one of these situations.
He actually already has.
But it's still difficult to grasp their suffering.
Anyone else struggle with this?
xo,
C

Caroline, I have made pincushions out of conch shells but the mason jars are perfect and adorable. You could even use a larger jar and fill it with buttons...very handy!! I thought your use of the selvage as finishing trim was most clever. As ever, your choice of colors from fabric to lunch is fabulous...and your photography,GREAT!! What fun..Julia

  5. Caroline, I just barely found this tutorial and I have to tell you that I LOVE these pin cushions. My poor old brain has been in overdrive (quite a feat for someone my age, hehehe) for days now trying to think of fun and sweet gifts to make for my church ladies Christmas gathering in two weeks. I only need a few, not enough for everyone and these are perfect. I don't think I'll be able to find the same bottle but if I look through all my bottles I know I have three or four half pint jelly bottles and they will work very well too. Thank you so much for this adorable and useful idea and tutorial. I adore pin cushions and I know I'll have to make some for myself when I can find more bottles. Big Hugs....

  6. I love the little jars! Thanks for the tutorial. I work in children's hospital and you can easily get overwhelmed with sad situations...but you are right - prayer empowers us. A gift my mother instilled in me, always pray! Hugs! You made me smile this morning. Thanks!
