Like most women I like make-up and jewelry and clothes. The artist in me craves color and fashion I guess, although I am certainly not obsessed with my appearance because most days you can find me in fleece or work out clothes even if I haven't made it to the gym. When I do "go out" though, I enjoy being dressed nicely, wearing make up and jewelry...what gal doesn't? And I am not one of those lucky ladies who just happens to look great without make-up. Stop reading here if you are one of those lucky women. So anyway, as I was putting on my make-up the other day and I was thinking some random things:
*in my opinion, our culture is obsessed with looks
*most women who model for magazine covers are likely 98% thinner than the average woman (they have not had 4 kids like I have, if I do say so myself...sorry!)
*their faces and bodies have been airbrushed (I'd look amazing too, if I was airbrushed!)
Then I thought about make-up and what I am trying to cover up...blemishes, wrinkles, etc.
So then it got me thinking even more...
God doesn't care about what we look like on the outside; He's all about heart and soul.
Sure, He wants us to take care of ourselves, but He certainly doesn't give a rip if we've mastered the latest make-up application technique. He KNOWS all of our blemishes and wrinkles anyway. He knows how many hairs are on our heads for heaven's sake.
I believe God is most concerned about the condition of our hearts. We (mostly talking to women here!) need to believe we are beautiful ONLY because we belong to Him and because we were created in His image.
So then I started thinking about foundation, the make-up foundation. It's purpose is to go on as the first layer, to smooth out the skin and to cover any blemishes. It's the foundation coat of make-up that's supposedly the most important.
And so it is with our faith. If we lay the foundation first and put Him on first every day, then He will smooth out the "wrinkles" and clear up any "blemishes" throughout our day.
“But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1 Sam 16:7)
Lord, teach me to put YOU on first every single day and to trust and know that YOU are the one who fills me up with beauty, not the world. I pray that You are my foundation and ask that you smooth my blemishes and sins so that I may live each day to glorify you. Amen.
Have you pondered make-up?
xoxo,
C
